On The RopesPosted on 12 Dec 2009
![]() C-walk: Welcome to the very first edition of "On The Ropes" with your party hosts, Chris and Shane. I don't have a wealth of experience in writing columns, but I'm sure most of you readers have seen my lengthy write-ups on the PCW forums. I have also posted numerous reviews of past PCW shows, one of which made it onto the main website (yep, I'll brag as much as I can). Shane, got anything to add? Shane: Hi. C-walk: Thanks, Shane. The format of this article is going to be pretty straight forward. We will bring up a number of questions and give our thoughts, feelings and in-depth opinions on them. The questions will relate to a variety of topics, including Premier Championship Wrestling, as well as mainstream wrestling and mixed martial arts. But now that we've got all that jazz out of the way, lets get down to business! 1. PCW's annual December event, Season's Beatings, has finished the year with a bang! What are overall thoughts on the show? Shane: It was good. C-walk: Care to expand on that? Shane: It was a typical PCW show, which left every fan wanting more. The only bad thing is that we have to wait over a fucking month for the next show! C-walk: That's true. Right now PCW is going a bout 5 weeks between each show, which is a bit of a wait for us hardcore fans. But regardless, SB was a very good show, arguably the best one of the year. I'd say it rivals The Premier Cup, and I would have a hard time choosing between the two. We got to see a LOT of solid wrestling and some entertaining promos. Plus, two major announcements concerning the next show. It was the perfect way to end the year. 2. What was your favourite match at Season's Beatings? Shane: Well, Omega vs Royce was a classic match-up, but ATM vs SBC stood out the most for me. Considering SBC has only been wrestling for a month or so, he has been showing that he has a lot of potential. Meanwhile, ATM has continued to stand out as a singles competitor and will probably be challenging for the Heavyweight Title by mid-2010. C-walk: Yeah, I could definitely see that happening. I enjoyed ATM's singles run back at the LID early last year, and always thought that he could really develop into a top-tier singles wrestler for PCW. But personally, my favourite match at Seasons Beatings was probably The Canadian Title match between Adam Knight and "Average" Joe Dixon. They really worked hard that night, and it definitely showed. The highlight of the match was obviously Knight's suicide dive through the ropes and onto Dixon on the outside. It was absolutely brutal! I'm happy to see Dixon as the new champion, even though Knight didn't have that long of a title run. But I'm sure he'll get another shot sooner or later. Shane: You're probably just used to the year-long title runs, since Sanchez and Tatum held the Canadian Title for like over 2 years combined. Plus, Omega has been the Heavyweight Champion for about a year and a half now. C-walk: Good point. The Tag Titles are another story, though... 3. Some sad news came up recently, that being the death of Eddie "Umaga" Fatu. Do you have any comments or favourite Umaga moments that you'd like to share? Shane: I never really cared for the character of Umaga, although I thought he was a talented wrestler. It's just that the Wild Samoan character has been done quite a few times over the past 20 years or so. My favourite Umaga moment would definitely be when he was a part of 3 Minute Warning and frog-splashed two lesbians during that HLA angle. C-walk: Why does that not surprise me? Anyhoo, I was actually a pretty big fan of Umaga, considering I barely watched WWE during his last run in the company. Always thought he was very agile for one of the bigger wrestlers, and had a very unique moveset. My favourite Umaga moment would be... probably any moment where he was destroying Jeff Hardy. There were many of 'em, too. 4. On a lighter note, UFC: 107 is tonight! What are your predictions for the main bouts? Shane: I'm pretty sure that Frank Mir is going to defeat Cheick Kongo in the heavyweight bout. Kenny Florian is going to beat Clay Guida (probably elbow his hair right off). As for the main event, BJ Penn is going to retain the Lightweight Title against Diego Sanchez, but I don't really care about either of those guys. C-walk: Yes, Mir definitely has an advantage in his fight with Kongo, assuming he can get it to the ground. If he can accomplish this, then he should be able to submit Kongo fairly easily (since Kongo hasn't shown much of a ground game yet). However, Kongo has very powerful fists, so if the fight stays standing, he definitely has a chance to pull out the win. Florian vs Guida should be entertaining. I think that Florian will have a better gameplan and be able to win, but you can't really count out Guida. He seems to be the gatekeeper of the lightweight division at this point. A win over Florian could vault him into title contention. As far as the Lightweight Title fight goes, I am really pulling for Sanchez. Not a fan of BJ Penn at all, but I admit that he will be a tough test for the 'Nightmare'. This is honestly too tough to call. If I HAD to put money on it, I'd probably go with Penn... but I wouldn't be happy about it. 5. The major news coming from the TNA camp is that Hulk Hogan has recently signed with the company. In one year's time, do you think the Hogan-TNA combination will have been a positive or a negative for the company? Shane: I'm not as much of a TNA fan as you are, and I'm definitely not a Hogan fan... but I can see both positive and negative things happening from this. The positives being that older wrestling fans will be tuning in to see Hogan again and continue tuning in to see the newer talent, such as AJ Styles, Daniels, The Machine Guns, Jay Lethal, etc. But the negative side of this would be Hogan's ego. He just seems self-centred, and he is apparently going to be the head booker. If he does decide to wrestle, I could see him booking himself to win the World Title. I don't know how "in-tune" he is with TNA, so I don't know how well he will be able to book the younger guys. That's what makes me so unsure about this whole situation. C-walk: I can definitely see what you're saying, Shane. There is obviously a huge risk with Hogan, and I'm hoping that the end result will be worth that risk. It's no surprise that I'm a huge TNA fan (look for the Impact Analysis on the main site in the next few days). Shane: *cough*Foley-Plug*cough* C-walk: So I really hope that this move works out for them. Hogan seems to be enthusiastic about his move to TNA, and I do think that he can be a positive, but the fact that he basically has full creative control does scare me. My feeling is that if Hogan can *somehow* put his ego aside, this will be a positive. But I'm just worried that he's going to bring in a bunch of older names with him. Guys like the Nasty Boys that are past their prime. Shane: Wait, they had a prime? C-walk: Touché. I really don't think that is the way to go for TNA. What scares me the most is that I could easily picture Hogan bringing in a bunch of old guys, causing the ratings to go down, and then ditching TNA and claiming it was their fault. But I'll try to be optimistic and say that, a year from now, Hogan will have increased the overall popularity of TNA. 6. Finally, PCW Presents New Years Knockout on January 21st, 2010, at Dylan's on Pembina. What are you most looking forward to at the event? Shane: For me, it's easily the Fan's Bring The Weapons Match... and Steve Corino. C-walk: Way to take the obvious route. Shane: It's true, though. I haven't been to FBTW match before, nor have I personally seen Steve Corino wrestle live. I was really looking forward to seeing him wrestle at Blaze Of Glory in Morden, but he had to pull out due to injury. C-walk: I liked what they did as an alternative, with the whole tournament. Those are usually pretty fun. But I'm getting off topic. If I had to choose, I'd probably say that I'm most looking forward to the FBTW match, just because it's going to be such an interactive experience, and that's what I tend to remember the most. Already got a few ideas on what to bring. But I can't wait to see Steve Corino either, especially since he's teaming with Royce. Shane: They did have some great matches against one another, so as a team, who knows how good this match could be. C-walk: This isn't an official question, but do you think the Canadian Title or Tag Titles will change hands on the show? Shane: I don't think the Canadian Title will change hands since Dixon still has the undefeated streak going. As for the tag titles, I don't see Nate or Marty beating 787... C-walk: Unless it's a Bulimia match. Shane: But I do see a potential heel turn for Nate. He seemed to tease it at the last show. I don't know if Marty will turn, as well, or if this will lead to the end of the Suicide Kings. C-walk: Well, considering Moses Luke has probably eaten breakfasts that were bigger than Nate, this could be the end of the Suicide Kings regardless. But I agree... I don't really see either of those titles changing hands. Kenny Omega hasn't been booked for the show (at least not as of writing) so I'm not sure if the Heavyweight Title will even be on the line. In retrospect, this is a good show for Kenny to miss, since it's got a lot of big matches booked already. Either way, it's definitely not going to be a show that you want to miss! Shane: You know we'll be there, so it'll already be worth the price of admission. C-walk: So that's the column. If you have any comments... Shane: Keep them to yourself. C-walk:... Or just send us a message on the PCW Forum. We are pretty easy to find, and we're open to possible suggestions for topics on our up-coming columns. Anything else you want to add, Red Shirt? Shane: Leafs Suck. C-walk: Nice. We hope you enjoyed the first edition of On The Ropes! Shane: And if you didn't like it... fuck you. C-walk: Classy. Content Management Powered by CuteNews
